Setting Difficulty and Number of Tries

Modified on Mon, 03 Apr 2023 at 07:04 AM

As the instructor in Case Simulation courses, you can change the number of tries a student gets to take for Learning Phases or Challenge Phases.  You can also change the difficulty of the goal in the Challenge Phase.  For example, a higher difficulty raises the goal metric the student must attain to complete the challenge phase, making higher grades harder to achieve.  To change difficulty and tries, please follow the instructions below:

Learning Phase:

1.  Log into your instructor account.

2.  From the "Your Courses" page, select the link for the course that you wish to configure.

3.  Select the Change Course Settings link on the Course Details page.

4.  Next, select the Learning Phase Difficulty accordion option.

5.  By default, the student can only complete the the Learning Phase once. To change the number of tries a

student has in completing the Learning Phase, drag the slider to change the number of tries and click Submit to save your changes.

Note:  If the student submits more than one try, their overall grade will be the highest of their attempts.

Challenge Phase:

To set the difficulty and number of tries for the Challenge Phase repeat steps 1 - 3 above and select the accordion option Challenge Phase Difficulty.  By default, the changes you make will effect your full course, but you can change the difficulty and tries for one lesson (to make it easier) or for that final project (to give it one try only).  To see how to change only one lesson, see the Adjusting for One Lesson section below.

By default the lessons and project challenge phases can be completed an unlimited number of times with the difficulty setting of medium.

Adjust Goal Metric:

To change the goal metric, adjust the slider to the left or right. The level of difficulty will update up or down in the graphic.

To decrease the goal metric, make the Challenge Phase easier, adjust the slider to the left.

To increase the goal metric, make the Challenge Phase more difficult, adjust the slider to the right.

To save your changes, click the Submit button.

Adjust Number of Tries:

To adjust the number of tries, adjust the slider to the left or right.  The number of tries will update left or right in the graphic.

To increase the number of tries a student can attempt the Challenge Phase, adjust the slider to the left.

To decrease the number of tries a student can attempt the Challenge Phase, adjust the slider to the right

To save your changes, click the Submit button.

Adjusting for One Lesson:

To adjust the difficulty or number of tries for one lesson or project only, select the lesson or project you would like to change from the dropdown menu, and then update the goal metric and/or number of tries sliders accordingly. Then click Submit to save your changes.

This will update only the lesson selected.  In the dropdown, lessons with custom difficulty settings show up with an asterisk.  To keep them unique, make sure to select lessons individually when setting difficulty going forward.
