Creating a Custom Course

Modified on Mon, 01 Apr 2024 at 07:15 AM

If your school has a current All-Access license, you have the ability to create a custom course where you can select assignments from each of our simulations to make one unique course. Teaching a Marketing course this semester, select the Marketing assignments from our Retailing, Restaurant and Fashion simulations, to name a few, and create a custom Marketing course.

Below are the instructions for creating a custom course:

Creating Course:

1.  Log into your instructor account.

2.  Click on the “Add a New Course” button at the top of your home page.

You will now be presented with the Course Setup page.

3.  Complete the Course Setup page as follows:

  • Add a new course for:  Select 'Custom Course' from the pull-down menu.
  • Usage:  Select either Main Curriculum or Supplemental.
    • Main Curriculum - Select if the Virtual Business will be your primary curriculum for the course. By default all quizzes (reading & math) along with the simulations will automatically be turned on.
    • Supplemental - Select this option if you will be using the Virtual Business to supplement existing curriculum.  For example, you are teaching an Accounting course with an existing curriculum, but you would like to use the simulations to reinforce the material within that curriculum.  By default all quizzes will be disabled and only the simulations will be turned on.

Note: Regardless of which option you choose, you have the ability to enable/disable quizzes once the course has been created.

  • Prevent student enrollment via the Knowledge Matters LMS:  Select Yes ONLY if you are integrating this course into an external LMS such as Canvas or Blackboard, otherwise select No
  • Course End Date - Enter the date that the course will end. Knowledge Matters recommends entering a date several days past when you think the course will end to allow for extra time to complete the lessons.
  • Course Name - Enter a unique name to identify the course.  For example,  Marketing - Period 1, Marketing - Period 2, etc....

4.  Click the "Submit" button. There will be a slight delay after clicking the Submit button, please only click the

submit button once. You will now be presented with the Custom Course Setup screen.  Click OK to close the Pop-up box

Selecting Assignment:

Once your course is created you will need to select which assignments will be included.  The instructions for adding assignments are below.

1.  Under the Excluded Assignments list, click on the assignment that you wish to include in your course.

2.  Click on the Include button.

3.  Assignment will now appear in the Included Assignments list.

4.  Repeat steps 1 - 3 until all assignments that you wish to include have been added.  Once all assignments have

been added, click the 'Submit Changes' button at the bottom of the page to create your custom course.
